I've noticed that some of the comments are very negative regarding LaCie customer service. I think the company might have taken this feedback to heart, because I received some of the best customer service I've ever had from LaCie in March 2009 (based in Oregon - talked to two different customer service staff who were both excellent to deal with).
For our small non-profit office of 6 staff, we originally purchased the LaCie 5big, which was a complicated unit and did not work at all for us. LaCie was almost immediately able to diagnose the problem and recommended this unit for our office instead. This is a great unit and was simple to install.

| Not sure if it works with Leopard (10.5) but this works out of the box with Snow Leopard (10.6). Network management to set up RAID (use the switch on the back of the drive to set it to SAFE100 which is RAID0). Takes a few hours to format itself. After that, select it in Time Machine preferences and away you go. PERFECT solution and no special hacking or configuration required. "Just works" right out of the box. Oh and you can easily turn off the glowing light. Highly recommended. |

| I purchased this for the capacity since I have a MacPro that I use three hard drive bays for my MAC and am overall pleased with the purchase... it works well with my Time Machine backups and can access it over my home network either with my office PC or any MAC we have in the house. It has a slight fan noise so I located it with my home network panel. Other than that its been a great addition! |

| reading the other reviews it seems there were some problems with this drive. But these must have been solved. mine worked fine right out of the box. set the RAID mode i wanted and reformatted. my macbooks and an xp box found it on the network with no problem. time machine works. don't even have to use lacie's config program to setup. setup with browser and the drive shows up in the finder. no problem. reliability? well it's only been a week. time will tell. |

This unit (2 TB 2 Big Network 2) like other Lacie storage is rugged and has similar external hard shell like D2 Quadra. I choose to order this NAS unit because i had a good experience with earlier D2 Quadra 750 GB storage. So even though this unit is expensive than the available other products in home office network storage segment i choose this one. The few days it worked were ok . The unit has useful features that makes it a good small office storage --however the software or the firmware or for whatever reason mine kept getting offline consistently.
Useful Features:
1. RAID 0 /1 2 disk feature for redundancy
2. has an additional USB port to attach external device or additional disks.
3. A printer could be attached and the unit acts as print server.
Dissappointments:
1. I couldn't make the unit add my d2 quadra 750 GB storage as external storage.
2. Very frequent freezing of the device. The unit works and hangs very often making hard power cycle the only way to restart it. The power off switch doesn't work when the unit is frozen.
3. Extremely long time to boot up when its power cycled when it was hung.
Now this could be i received a faulty unit and All these symptoms may be attributing to some bad logic board etc and may not be there in a good unit. But then again i would say what i have experienced with the unit.
When working the unit gives moderately good data transfer when i connected to my wireless hub . But it broke so fast that didnt had chance to test its efficiency characteristic properly. I have placed a refund and ordered return shipment. |

The LaCie 1TB 2Big network drive is junk - do not buy !!! - a waste of your time and money. Every negative comment in this thread about the product and customer service has happened to me with this drive.
With less than 50 hours of operation the unit failed - LaCie sent a new power supply, it did not solve the problem, unit was returned to Oregon to replace controller card, both disks (raid configuration) were wiped clean and then shipped back - the packing for shipment must have been done by the kindergarden class visiting the shipping department!! The unit arrived at my place as a piece of bent junk !!
Unit returned to LaCie (even with photo's sent of the damage they wouldn't ship me a new one without the junked one returned first !)
New unit shipped and has now failed with less than 100 hours !
Product is crap, customer support is crap, will never buy another product from LaCie ever. |

| advertised as - use from anywhere! but for those of us that are not technophiles, the fine print of "if you purchase a static ip address from your isp" would be helpful. time warner cable doesn't even offer that where I live. i called them and pretty much got a "yeah, that's too bad" - i was willing to work with them to see if there was another product that might be useful for us, but we are too small-time for them to care about. on top of that - it's a cranky little disk. the power adaptor is now failing. all of our files are trapped on there right now because, ironically, my lacie drive that i use to back of the server FAILED. cannot wait til we can afford to use someone else's awesome private server and leave hard drives behind. |

I had the unit for about a year and it worked OK. I had the drives mirrored so the data is safe. The unit itself is OK (not good, not bad) and I won't get into that; what really upset me was the customer service.
One day I tried to reboot the box, but it did not start up anymore. The front LED kept flashing red / blue.
I couldn't get a phone number for support, not even a chat with a service rep. You open a ticket on their system and then you go back end forth...slow process.
They said that they can't guarantee that when I get the unit back the data would be preserved. OK, I went to CBL Data recovery and after spending $800 for the recovery plus $100 for a new HDD I get my data on a new HDD. CBL said that the HDDs were fine, it was just a matter of putting them in a RAID array to get the data out. Expensive process, but I had to get my data out.
I send the unit to Lacie for repairs and then they send me a new unit. That sounds nice in a way, but I asked what happened with the data on my HDDs, I asked them to guarantee that the data would be erased...they can't guarantee anything about it. "We are just a hardware company"
This is a privacy issue. I am extremely pissed off because I have financial in formation related to my company on those drives. I asked them to send me back my drives or to guarantee that they erase the data. Still trying to talk to a rep on the phone.
I won't use the box anymore, I won't buy anything from Lacie again.

| After using the drive with no problems for about 1 year, I powered down the drive one day to go away for a weekend. When I came back the drive would not power back up. The unit had not been touched or moved in my absence,and it was working fine before I left. It simply stopped working. Customer service (after about 2 weeks of email communications) sent me a new external power supply to no avail. I was told that my only other option was to send in the unit but that would mean losing all data. In desperation, I purchased another unit hoping I could swap the drives and save my data, but nothing worked. Stupidly, I had relied on the RAID configuration instead of backing up my music and picture files, which are now completely lost. Lesson learned. If you must purchase one of these, get two and be sure to back up your data. |
