I've had two of the 500's since about May 09,
and I've had one of their 320's for quite a
while. My new 500's have 7200 rpm Western
Digital SATA drives. I can barely get the
bare drives for less than these cost and when
you add in the case and power supply... wow.
So you can rig them as external SATA drives
for your DVR (need a SATA cable and be willing
to cut up the case a tiny bit) or take the drive
out when your computer landscape changes and
put it in your old desktop... Anyway, I use one
as a common ole USB2 backup drive and it's still
running just fine. USB drive's aren't real fast,
but this one's faster than most.
And oh, the heat thing: Despite what you hear
sometimes, aluminum cases (like this one has)
are the best (after a fan, of course).
But why does it seem otherwise in a lot of the
reviews you see? Well... the problem is that if
you feel an aluminum case and a plastic case
which are at the same temperature; the aluminum
case will always feel much hotter even while the
drive inside is cooler. That's because aluminum
is much better at conducting heat, and this
includes your hand! |

No issues using it - works like any external hard drive would. I like the design.

I bought one of the Cirago 1TB storage a few months ago and got a little concerned when I saw other reviews of the drives failing. I have not had any problems with mine but I ran HD Tune Pro to verify my drive. The test results shows 100% good sectors (Whew!).
I've used up to 850GB on the drive and haven't had a single problem. Without a fan, the enclosure can get a little hot but that's only during heavy read/write periods.
I'm sorry other users have lost data but hard drives are notorious for failure. If you read through the reviews of all the other brands, even the big names have similar reviews of the drives crashing and losing data.

I just started using this product a week ago, and haven't had any issues with it. I use the automatic backup function that vista has, and it works great. I use it on my Mac and my PC, and it works fine with both. The Mac takes a little longer to recognize the drive, but that's not a big deal. I also connect it to my media center, and no issues there either. Overall, a nicely designed product at a good price.

The item was very well packaged and in excellent (new) condition when I received it. The only minor drawback I can think of is that it didn't have a utility for making compressed back-ups of computer hard drives such as Ghost included in the box. WYSIWYG - What you see is what you get. You get a nice-looking external HD with a LOT of storage capacity.
Plug and GO! 500GB with a USB cord!

PRO: non-techie just plugged it in and it works fine on Windows Vista Basic
Have been using for 9+ months without any problem
GREAT CHEAP ALTERNATIVE THAN FLASH DRIVES OR SD CARDS
CON: Needs to be plugged into a power source and then connected to laptop via USB ... so so NOT PORTABLE
IF .... as some reviewers say ... it just stops working ... I am going to be a total loser!

Works just fine

I bought this external hard drive when I discovered that my existing unit did not have the capacity I needed. At a cost of under $50.00, it has performed well, no problems in installing or using. I am quite pleased with it.
stored my whole old PC on it

my old pc was on its way out the door. the power button wasnt working all the time, and id get the blue screen of death when to many programs were running because the operating system wasnt designed for what i was doing on the PC. ive never used external storage drives before and all the ones i was finding in the local stores were not program compatible with the operating system i was using. as a last resort i came here online to see if i could locate something that wouldnt crash my PC when i hooked it up to the USB port. yes my old PC only had 1 USB port can you belive that. so go figure when i needed a new mouse and a storage drive it was a pain cause they were all USB no PS2 port connections... i eventually did find a mouse with a PS2 compatible part which was great because all the drives were USBs only. after ordering this external hard drive i got to thinking. oh my god does it really have enough space to store all my music, exe. programs, ebooks, statements, movies, ect.. now im not computer savy so i didnt understand how big this drive was a first but now after having completed the transfer of all my crap from the old PC to this new external drive i can truly say WOW!!!! not only is it holding everything that was on my old PC but it could hold 4 times what was on my PC... let me tell you how my other PC lasted so long i do not know but for anyone not computer savy like me. this paperback book size external drive is the way to go. no problems with it at all and im still adding more stuff on it now using my new laptop computer. the price is reasonable compared to what i saw out in stores by me. so give it a whirl and see if it works for u.
Very nice for the price

The hard drive was very simple, nothing extra fancy. Compatible with Mac was my main concern and it was hard to find out if it was. Small, portable but the external measurements are different than I found online. Overall very good product.
Great...but we have to wait!!!

The Cirago CST4500 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive is great thus far. It was already pre-formatted in the correct format that I needed (as I was planning to use this as extra storage for my PS3). I was able to transfer about 60GB of info from my laptop to free up space and another 35GB+ from my PS3 without an issue. As you all should know by now. That is only half the battle. Now, I am in the waiting phase to see if it holds up. I have seen many externals that corrupt or just fail after months or even years. So, for now, the waiting has begun.
