I have Time Warner service and DVR Explorer 8300HDC (with OCAP OS). I have this product for about 3 weeks now; no reboot, reset or estrange behavior whatsoever.

When I connected the HDD to the DVR eSATA interface, the DVR automatically recognized it and ask for formating. After clicked OK that was the last configuration that i did.

My CAXM 1TB External Hard Drive contains Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Hard Disk. It's a very good disk for an external hard drive. Check out tomshardware review of Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B.

Here are some disk specs from the review: "... HDT721010SLA360, which can be broken down like so: Hitachi Deskstar T-series (HDT), 7,200 RPM (72), maximum family capacity 1 TB (the first 10), actual capacity (the second 10), the generation (S) and Z-height (L stands for 26.1 mm), the interface (3 = SATA/300) and the cache capacity (6 = 16 MB)."

So, it is a 7200 RPM disk with 16 MB cache and quite low idle power consumption - 5.4W, which should make it perfect for eSATA capable DVRs.

It works well with my DirecTV HR22-100 DVR.

The black CAXM measures 7 5/8" x 4 3/8" x 1 1/4" or 193mm/112mm/32mm, it has a power switch (very convenient for a backup disk which is not going to be always on), eSATA and USB 2.0 interfaces, the enclosure is aluminum and it has no cooling fans. The stand is plastic and it is held in place by friction, it's a little flimsy, but does the job.

The disk looks and feels high quality and it is not going to be an eyesore on your desk or next to your DVR.

My disk came with the stand, an eSATA bracket for a desktop, a 100-244V~ 50-60Hz Power adapter with 5' adapter to disk cable (the adapter looks a little different from the one, shown on the product pictures and it measures: 3.5"x2"x1.3", excluding the integrated two prong power plug), a 48" eSATA cable and a 40" USB cable. Very nice package for the price!
user comment Cavalry Storage CAXE Series 1 TB USB / eSATA External Hard Drive CAXE3701T0 Includes eSATA Kit Works just as good as the silver CAXE3701T0 with Tivo

My first purchase was a silver CAXE3701T0. I've owned it for about 2 months and am using it with a Tivo HD. About a month ago, I purchased the black CAXM3701T0. Both units are relatively quiet. Both boxes feel barely warm to the touch. Both have an on/off switch. I have not opened the enclosure, but I've read that others have confirmed the silver model has a Western Digital drive. The only difference that I have noticed is the black enclosure is 9" long and the silver is only 8" long. I have not had any issues with either drive reading/writing 24x7 with my Tivo units.

One note for Tivo HD owners. This unit is "plug and play" for the Tivo HD series 3 with the larger internal hard drive. But the Tivo HD model without the series 3 in the description (TivoHD) and smaller internal hard drive, it requires opening the Tivo unit, temporarily attaching the internal and external Cavalry drive to a PC, running a quick program to pair the two drives, and then putting everything back together. You can find the instructions on the tivocommunity dot com forums by searching for "external tivo storage". From start to finish, it should take most people less than 30 minutes to complete.

I have had my HD for almost two years now and not a single problem, except the time shortly after purchase when I switched it on AFTER turning on my computer (computer does not recognize device under such conditions when linked to the esata input-and I almost returned it) also DO NOT turn off until AFTER you have turned of your computer.
A faultless, smooth running device I highly recommend this product, I have several HD's and this one is by far the best.

I purchased the 1TB Calvary (CAXB37091T0) in 2008 Dec. Six months in and I am getting another one to clone the original for offsite storage. The hardware has worked flawlessly for me. I am a seasoned IT professional of over 20 years (Unix and Windows administrator). Backing up to an external drive saved me big time. My PC burned up and smoked my 2 internal drives. I restored onto the new hardware with this 1TB drive. I am happy.

Never heard of the company before so I was a little hesitant to buy. Other reviewers have stated there is a name brand drive inside: (WD). I bought it hoping to increase my DVR's storage capacity. Cox cable said their (rental-only) cable box/DVR supported ESATA external HDs but couldn't say for sure that it would work with this particular model. Attached it to my Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD Cablebox/DVR with the included ESata Cable. After about 5 minutes of rebooting and formatting the cable box reported memory usage had gone from nearly full to 10%. That come out to about 180 hours of HD capacity.

Some particulars: The case is solid. The power supply/transformer is small. Works neatly silently. There is unnecessarily bright blue led on front flickers and glows red when hard drives spin, best to cover it with tape. The packaging and documentation were fair to poor. Came in a flimsy box that would not protect the drive from severe deliveryman abuse. However it worked out of the box with no driver installation needed or any other complications. Contrary to what some other reveiwers have written, in this case the programming previously recorded on the DVR's internal hard drive was still available for viewing after connecting this external drive.

Highly recommended. I will buy another for data storage when it goes on sale.

Reviewer: S. Lee,
First off let me get the specs out of the way:

7200RPM
16MB Cache
110V to 240V supported (great for travelers abroad)
1 TB
eSATA and USB connections

This drive is fast, quiet and runs cool. Inside the aluminum case is a Westernal Digital 3.5" HD. The solid aluminum construction dissipates heat efficiently. I have yet to hear the hard drive spinning, and trust me, I have put this drive through the test with 4 simultaneous writes.

If you frequently write to your external drive, this is a top flight choice. If you move large chunks of data at a time, this drive is your choice. If you are ready to step up to the big leagues with 1TB capacity, this drive is your choice.

Don't get fooled by the bigger brand names. This drive is better. My friend's seagate already blew up on him. The Seagates are heavy, and the last time I checked, they only have an 8MB cache The Western Digital My Books are thicker, and at last check only use an inferior 8MB cache. Odd that a Cavalry product using a Westernal Digital drive would have better specs. In addition, you have to pay more and get the Premium edition of the My Book to get eSATA support. The thing this drive has over the big names is better construction, connectivity(eSata & USB), speed, lightweight, compact size, and price.

Get this drive. You can't go wrong.
user comment Cavalry Storage CAXE Series 1 TB USB / eSATA External Hard Drive CAXE3701T0 Includes eSATA Kit Works great with the DirecTV HR-21 HD DVR

I bought this 1 TB drive to essentially triple the storage capacity of the HR-21 from about 40 hours HD to 120 hours HD.

Note that the HR-21 is currently not capable of using the internal 300 GB drive and the external 1 TB drive simultaneously for video storage. You won't lose the content that has already been stored on the internal drive but you must turn off the external drive in order to access the recordings on the internal drive. The same goes for your series recording information and favorite channel line ups - you have to reprogram those (just once) when you insert the external drive.

The process of adding the external drive couldn't be simpler.
1. Turn off the HR-21
2. Connect the eSATA cable from the drive to the back of the HR-21
3. Turn on external drive first
4. Turn on HR-21
5. Wait a few minutes... reprogram your series recordings and favorite channels... Done!

The black drive looks very sleek next to the HR-21. The stand for the drive is included as is all necessary cables (power, eSATA, USB, etc).

The drive runs cool and very quiet. The blue light is annoyingly bright. I covered the light with a small piece of black electrical tape - problem solved.

Excellent HD for external storage!

One thing I like from this product is that you have the option to connect it using the USB or eSATA (10x USB 2.0 speed). What I can't find the option of add/remove it using eSATA port as a hot swap; I think this is not possible at this time. Bad things are: it has a bright blue light (you can use tape) and it does not have the option to turn off automatic after certain time of not use. Overall great product.

Whisper-quiet and incredibly fast with the included eSATA card.

Most good motherboards bought in the last 2-3 years will have an extra eSATA slot on the motherboard (same slot your hard-drives plug into) or the newer computers will even have an eSATA port already on the outside of your computer.

Either way, this drive is still very easy to hook-up and no drivers are needed with XP or Vista. Remember you don't need an actual PCI, AGP, etc slot open as it plugs directly into an eSATA slot on your MB - you just need an open spot where the card can be mounted.

Spend the extra 20$ or so on this drive and get a good one.
