The Cavalry Dock is perhaps the easiest and most cost-effective way to consolidate the storage of any two hard drives (WD10EACS, or equivalent, included). This two-bay, hot-swappable USB 2.0 dock is perfect for lumping together your odd-capacity drives into one Spanning device¿just insert any two 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives. Your new volume will be read as one drive with combined capacity when set to Spanning (BIG). And the BIG/JBOD settings are easy to change as well¿just use the switch on the back of the dock. Your extra hard drives can finally be put to good use with this versatile dock. And with no clumsy cover to unscrew or disassemble, your hot-swappable drives are always accessible and well-ventilated, without a noisy fan. With the USB 2.0 interface and stable, compact base, the Cavalry Dock is perfect for your home or office desktop computer.

Perfect for my backups

I looked for a large drive to use on my mac with time machine to back up my photos, music, software, and system. It was looking through the available drives here on amazon when I came across this drive. There was only one review and it praised the drive very highly.
After using it for a few weeks, I concur with the original reviewer. The drive housing will hold two drives and connects via usb to your computer. I love that I can mount any of my old drives by simply slipping it into the housing as if it were removable media. It came with a massive 1tb drive that is fast and large enough for even my overstuffed system.
The drive is so quiet I often have to put my hand on the housing to see if its vibrating. It works silently in the background and I feel confident I'm protected should I do something stupid and loose any data.
If you are looking for a backup drive, you can't go wrong with this one. I'm not a tech head so I'm not prone to find fault just for the sake of finding something to gripe about for a review or to make myself look smart. I'm not. I'm sure someone could find something to be unhappy about but so far this drive has been fault free and I'm very happy with it. |

THIS IS A GREAT PURCHASE! Really takes away the hassle of having to put together a HD casing! Works great! The funniest thing about the lights on this thing is they look like a police car's flashing blue lights and the red on stays on when 2 drives are in it. Works great! OH, did I forget about the WD 1TB it comes with? For this price, you will NOT find any better, even on Ebay...Thank you AMAZON!!!!!!!!!!!

Cavalry Hard Drive Dock 1TB Storage

| Whilst this is not the prettiest of units, it is a terrifically simple and inexpensive way of backing up large amounts of data. I keep all my company's records on my Windows 7 based PC: photography, accounting, PDFs of all documents, etc. and I need to be sure that there is the absolute minimum chance of losing anything. There are any number of backup programs available to perform whatever backup tasks you might want; I am using the Microsoft SyncToy which was free and does everything that I need. I have less than 1TB of data and everything from my PC backs up to one drive. Then I back that drive up to a second unit and take it offsite. The unit stays off unless I am backing up but even when it is on it is quiet because there are no fans; the unit stays cool enough as the drives are not enclosed. I have only been using the unit for a few months but have had no problems. With 1TB drives now under $100 replacing one were it to go wrong would be no burden. |
Great Hard Drive

| This drive has so far been flawless. I didn't particularly want to throw my old drive out since I had just outgrew it. I simply took my old drive stuck in in the extra slot. Set the unit to recognize both drives as one and reformatted so the would work with My Mac. So I have a 1.5 TB drive that works great. |

It doesn't look very pretty but it works.
Been looking for a convenient way of doing backups.
With TB of data we're beyond DVD backups being practical any more.
This just works. You plug in the drives, plug the usb into the PC (Windows or Linux).
I've been using it with a Sheevaplug ARM PC and running mediatomb from it.
The base is solid and stable.
Enough said.

| The drive is fantastic. There was a little snag in getting the drive letter to show in my computer but reading the Windows help fixed it in 2 minutes flat. Other than that it was plug and play. |
Nice backup solution

I was recovering from a LaCie debacle for backup and decided that this minimalist approach would make sense. Installation was easy and I was able to backup my whole machine in short order. By shuffling various hard drives through this platform you can pretty much have infinite storage conveniently at hand. Understandably the unit is powered by a substantial power supply rather than the USB port itself but that's really no problem.

Returning my new WDD 1TB My Book unit in favor for the Calvary Dual HDD Dock with a 1TB Hitachi HD. I just got this unit today, it came with a Hitachi 1TB HD in a factory sealed moisture barrier bag.
INSTALLATION
You can set the micro switches on the back side for "spanning" to have a pair of drives show as one or for "JBOD" (Just A Bunch Of Disks) to have the hard drives show individually. I left the the default setting of JBOD.
I'm using it on an XP machine, the installation is easy but apparently, it may often involve a step that's not in the documentation.
XP found the Hitachi 1TB HDD no problem BUT no drive letter showed up in Windows Explorer. I had to do the following:
Right click on the My Computer icon in your XP OS> select Manage> select Disk Management> select your new HDD in the graph & follow the setup Wizard which will among other things assign it a letter - you'll be in business in no time.
One more thing, the wizard may ask you if you want to format the disk, if you do, you may want to opt for the quick format to save a lot of time.
This missing step is likely the cause for the negative reviews that report this product not working or DOA.
DESCRIPTION
Function over form is what this product offers. It takes up more space than the small My Book but that's OK for me. Simple & straight-forward yet expandable & more utility than a regular external HDD thanks to it's design. I already own a back-up software so I didn't want any bundled junk with my hardware. Unlike the WDD My Book, this unit AFAIK has no junky firmware & thus will not need flakey firmware fixes like the WDD.

Need some works to use this drive

I couldn't use it for a wile, and finally found the solution of how to recognize and assign a drive letter to this 1TB HDD. It is cheaper than other 1TB drive and expendable, but still you need to do some works to use it. Please take steps bellow:
My computer -> right click -> Manage -> Dsik Management -> It will recognize the drive and ask you to select among options. You will be able to format and assign the drive letter and use it.
Good luck! |
Great Idea, Poor Product

| The external hard drive docking station is a great idea, unfortunately not a happy result for me. In my particular case both the original and replacement shipments arrived with dead hard drives. Too bad, I wish I had the same positive experience as all the five star reviewers. On the bright side, Amazon made the return process painless. Thank you Amazon. Therefore: one star for the product and five stars for Amazon = a three star rating overall. Good luck. |
