I'm a photographer and picked this up because I have a ton of storage needs. My computer has a low amount of space on it, so I put all of my clients' images on it while I'm working on them. Once I'm done, I store them on a much larger Buffalo TeraStation that's attached to my network. The file transfer speed is around 25MB/sec, which is better than what I've seen on other USB drives that I've owned. In Lightroom and Photoshop, I don't notice any kind of slowdown, and everything seems to move seamlessly within my system. I'd definitely recommend it to my friends, and I'll probably pick up another one when they come out with higher capacities.

I've had this baby for nearly two years now, and for the most part, it's fantastic. There's an optional TurboBoost enhancement, which transfers data at 20 mbs on occasion. (It's far from the 480 mbs advertised, but still one of the better rates I've seen personally.) It's also lightweight, attractive and compact on your desktop, turns off automatically when disconnected from the computer to conserve energy, and is priced well to boot. Unfortunately, it requires its own power supply, which can be very annoying when you need to bring your data with you on the go. Don't buy this device if that's what you need it for.

3 stars is for crashing once (after about 6 months of use). Thx to data recovery software and a LOT of man hours, I was able to save *most* of what was stored--nearly 1 whole tb of files. The whole process took up an entire weekend. After that, I reformatted the drive and haven't had a problem since. Out the 8 similar hard drives I've owned...this and an acomdata drive (which recently died on me after 6 years) were the only ones to fail like this!If not for the crash, though, this would easily be my fave desktop hard drive...and remains my go to storage device. Just be sure you have at least two backups of important files!

This hard drive was advertised as "ready to use out of the box" but it took me many hours and many discussions with the experts, including the tech support folks, to get it to work. The manual (paper and electronic) was very sparse and not very helpful. I followed the instructions exactly (as far as they went), but could not download anything. Finally, I learned that I had to load something called "Memeo" to get things going. "Memeo" was supposed to load during setup but that never happened. Then I was told to find it on the Internet and load it. After many, many attempts I got everything loaded and the system works (as far as I can tell). I fully realize that I lack a lot of computer skills, but this was supposed to be a "connect and go" experience. It was far from it. There are many backup hard drives on the market. I would recommend one with adequate instructions and ease of use.
