I does what it suppose to do:

You plug it, and a new hard disk unit appears. Sounds simple, but certain hard disk comes with backup software and stuff that makes things more difficult. Simple things are the best.

Aluminium box: This help to disipate heat from the hard disk, and that is good, because is equal to long life. People just get afraid by this, because you can feel the heat, but unless is a low power hard disk like the 'green' versions of Western Digital, all the Hard Disk get hotter (or solid state hard disks, which die even faster than a normal one, I'm waiting new technologies). Unfortunately, my pocket can't hold that expensives WD usb green hard disks. This price is good... hell yeah.

Faster data transfer: faster like a rocket, and even faster if you use the eSATA connection. They don't include the eSATA cable, as.h.les !, but USB cable.

Power adapter: I don't like it, the power pins are attached, and you can't hide in the case, like many power adapters, and that means, that they will scratch anything that they can when you put all together in a backpack or something, I hate that.

Anyway, nothing better for the price until now. 4.5 S.T.A.R.S.

I used this to expand my DirecTV DVR capacity. The first attempt it was not recognized. Upon fastening the cable everything worked fantastic and I've been enjoying the extra space for recordings for the last couple weeks.

The thing makes no noise, and I have it situated such that the light is barely visible.

This device is about the fastest you can get for a PC. Please note that if you do not have ESata connections external to your computer you will need to get the bracket that is shown above. In any case you will need to get an ESata cable. The pictures above show those 2 items but they don't come with this unit. They do come with the 1 TB item.
The device can run on USB, but don't bother. USB runs at 480, ESata runs at 3000, just as fast as the drive in your computer runs.

Setup is just connecting the wires and turning it on. If you deal with with large files you will be in heaven. My nightly backups to Firewire 800 drives were somewhat over 2 hours. It is just under an hour with this drive.

These devices are totally quiet. No fan. The case is the heat sink. The 1 TB drive barely warms the case, with this drive the case gets quite warm, but that is the design.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the lack of the 2 items mentioned above. I don't need the bracket and I did need a wire. I would give the 1 TB 5 stars (I have that one also).

I had occasion to write to the company about placement, etc. He mentioned that leaving the drives on is better for the longevity of the drive than turning them on and off.

If you have Win 7 you may have some trouble with this or any other external drive. If the drive disappears after a while this is the answer. I found it on a forum and it works (but I hope you don't need it):
Open Power Options in Control Panel.
For the currently selected plan, select "Change plan settings", then "Change advanced power settings".
Under Hard disk, change the setting to "Never".
Reboot (shouldn't be needed, but do it just in case :)

I'll echo the previous reviewer's indication- I just received this and there is no "ESATA kit"as was in the decription, the box doesn't even suggest that there was one in the box. You may want to not gamble on one being in there is you're looking for eSATA.

Had this great toy since 3 months now and I can access my files wherever I go. It is simple to set up and to use. Easy to back-up and has a USB plug for printers and other USB drive.

I have not tested the security of data, but I would not trust any of these networked device for sensitive information.

Disadvantages: sharing between users could be improved.

Being an Information Technology Tech and my wife a programer we use this drive as our mini home network and it works great. We connected it to our wireless router and can access it from any where in the house. We use it to store all our pics and music.

i have been very happy with this product. it was very easy to set up. i also like the way you can easily mount shared directories on this drive as you would any shared directory on a windows computer as well as get to the files stored on the drive via the web interface provided by the web based server running on the drive. unfortunately the transfer speed is not great i was seeing maybe 5MB/s. however it works great as a backup drive and file server for pictures and music.

First, be aware that the "Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition" and "Etherenet Disk Mini" are different products with different features. This information is related to the Home Edition. It works very well for me, although a little slow when accessed through the web interface.

After opening the necessary ports in my DSL router, I had to reboot the whole setup (edminihome, dsl, router) a few times before things worked. Not sure if that is needed, or if it just took some time for things to propagate through.

When you ask it to share a folder through the internet, it emails the receipient an URL pointing to the shared folder. The URL contains a long random string (I guess it's some kind of a cookie), but no password is required to sign in. So anybody who gets a copy of that URL (eg. if the email is forwarded to someone else) will have access to the shared folder, and I don't see a way to log who are actually accessing the files.

You can plug in multiple USB drives into the edminihome using a usb hub, and they are all visible to the edminihome. However you can select only one of them at any time to serve as MySafe. The remaining USB drives will be dormant. When selected as MySafe, the USB drive can be accessed through the web interface, but cannot be mounted as a network drive (FamilyLibrary, MyLibrary, and MyBackup can each be mounted as a network drive).

I wanted a drive to 1) provide backup between several Macintosh computers and 2) provide file retrieval when I was far away. The LaCie 500GB Home edition does these tasks very well.

The drive's HipServ software allows you to put an icon on the desktop. Clicking on this gives you almost instant access to the drive. But if you put the computer to sleep, then wake up later, the icon no longer works. You must re-find the disc. On 802.11b this is too slow.

If the router has not been restarted, the DNS address most likely does not change. The icon should still work regardless of computer status. This would make this drive a nearly perfect product.

Four Drive Bays and Seven RAID Modes for Speed and Protection
With two terabytes of storage included, this hard drive offers plenty of space to store all your important data, digital media files, and more. Each included drive features an extremely fast spin speed of 7200 rpm and has a 16 MB or larger cache for optimal performance.

The 4big Quadra gives you the option of seven different RAID modes: RAID 0, RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 3, RAID 3+Spare, Concatenation, and RAID 10. The ability to hot-swap drives in some RAID modes is an especially useful feature: you can remove and replace drives even while the 4big Quadra is running.

Depending on the RAID mode you choose, you can have either faster performance and higher storage space, or more protection. Please note that depending on the configuration, the usable amount of space might be less than 2 TB.
